I love pizza and one of my favourite restaurant chains is Pizza Express. We are frequent visitors as Thomas and Daniel love the children’s menu and I love the quality and freshness of their food. Therefore, we were quite pleased when we were invited to try their January Special menu called ‘Ultimate Comforts’. I went to their branch at intu Merry Hill on a a Sunday lunchtime with my mum, Elaine and Thomas and Daniel.
We were seated promptly by the friendly staff and had a peruse of the menu. While we were deciding on food, I had the Sloe Prosecco which was Prosecco with a splash of Greenall’s Sloe Gin and a fresh raspberry. It was lovely and was the perfect aperitif to start the meal. For our starters, my mum and I had the Pennette Formaggi which was a creamy three cheese & mustard sauce, with pennette pasta, garlic oil and black pepper. I was slightly worried as to what the portion size would be like as it sounded quite filling but it was served a small bowl and was a good size for a starter. The sauce had a good taste of mustard in the background but I could not really taste the garlic oil at all. It was a bit boring too be honest. I felt it needed a good whack of pepper to liven it up a bit but if you wanted some carbs to fill you up, then it would do the job fine. Thomas and Daniel had the Baked Dough Balls from the children’s menu with garlic butter and cucumber, peppers and tomatoes. They loved it as usual and I like it as the cucumber, peppers and tomatoes are always fresh and they make them look so appealing for the children.
For my main, I had the Barbacoa pizza (pictured at top of the post) which was topped with pulled Barbacoa beef, spicy chipotle salsa, garlic oil, mozzarella and tomato with a fresh finish of tomato, red onion and coriander. This was everything I wanted in a pizza and more! It was full of complex spicy, sweet and smoky flavours which all complimented each other beautifully. The fresh tomato, red onion and coriander added on after cooking gave it a real fresh finish too. My mum had the Pollo ad Astra pizza which was topped with Chicken, sweet Peppadew peppers, red onion, mozzarella, tomato, Cajun spices and garlic oil. She enjoyed her pizza and loved the flavours however she could not believe how big it was. Both our pizzas were served on the Romana base which are bigger, thinner and crispier than the normal base and are a similar style to what you might find in Rome. They are delicious but are definitely for bigger appetites! Thomas and Daniel had the Margherita pizza from the children’s menu. Thomas ate his in record time so it must of been good as he considers himself to be a pizza expert!
Despite being stuffed from our mains, my mum and I knew that we had to try the Chocolate Fondant which was a rich and intense warm chocolate cake with a soft melting centre topped with vanilla gelato. The fondants are cooked to order so you do have to wait a little while for them to cook. When it arrived, I was nervous in anticipation – would it have a soft centre as all fondants should? Yes they both did and I was very impressed! Please see the video on my Facebook page or my Instagram feed if you would like to see what my fondant was like in the middle as I dived in! Thomas and Daniel had the Chocolate Brownie from the children’s menu which was a gluten free chocolate brownie topped with a fresh strawberry and icing sugar and served with a Bambinoccino (frothed milk topped with chocolate powder). The portion size was just right and Thomas ate his very quickly, declaring it delicious and saying it was ‘good chocolate cake.’ Daniel did not eat as much of it as Thomas did as I think he found it a bit too rich. Next time we go, I shall go for the ice cream option for Daniel as it seems better suited for younger children.
Overall, we had a lovely time at Pizza Express and the food was excellent quality as always. The staff were friendly and attentive. The children’s menu costs £6.95 for the three courses which I think is a bargain. Pizza Express also give out hats (modelled by myself above!) and entertainment packs for all children which is amazing as it means you get a bit of peace and can enjoy your meal too. My mum’s pizza was £12.50 and mine was £13.20 which is a tad on the expensive side but due to their size and the freshness of the ingredients on them, I think it is worth it especially if you are going to the restaurant for a treat. Thomas is already asking when we can go to Pizza Express again so I am sure we will be back there soon!
